On February 16, Dr. Amy Jankowski and a team from Metro Eye conducted complementary vision screenings for the children at the Penfield Montessori Academy in Milwaukee. There are different criteria for each age group that they tested, but the main goal of the screening is to help detect the need for a referral to an outside provider. Dr. Jankowski created a screening protocol that is applicable to for infants to age 11+.
Vision is one of the most critical components to learning. If a child cannot properly see, everyday tasks become difficult, not to mention achieving success at school. Children don’t always speak up when experiencing vision problems, because they don’t know any other option and have had vision issue since birth. Poor vision is often misdiagnosed as learning of attention issues, which makes proper vision screening and regular eye exams so critical for children.
The vision screenings provided by Dr. Jankowski are not fully comprehensive eye exams, but they help to rule off certain eye conditions and detect if further treatment is necessary. These screenings also help teachers and parents understand the important of vision health for children, and what to do when vision issues arise.
At Metro Eye, we are very fortunate to have the resources to be able to contribute to such a wonderful organization that helps children of all ages and abilities. We look forward to spreading the words about children’s eye health and look for more opportunities for screenings in the future.
