When you think sunglasses, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? We picture somebody hanging out on a beach looking chic in a fresh pair of shades. There’s just something about sunglasses that can instantly turn your look from “plain Jane” to the cover of Vogue. So it’s no question that sunglasses are one of the greatest fashion accessories – but that’s not all! Sunglasses are much, much more than upgrading your style.
So it’s clear that sunglasses help keep the sun out of your eyes. But do you know why that’s so important?
Just as you need to protect your skin from the sun’s ultraviolet rays, the same goes for your eyes. Unlike your skin, you can’t put sunscreen on your eyes (ouch). That’s where sunglasses come in! They are your first line of the defense against ultraviolet rays. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can result in cataracts, macular degeneration and even burns on your retina.
Not all sunglasses are created equal. Just because a pair of shades has dark lenses doesn’t mean it will block ultraviolet rays. Look for sunglasses that are rated to block at least 98% of ultraviolet rays. That way you’ll be 100% certain that your eyes are protected when you are out and about in the sunshine.
For the Children
You make sure your kids are covered in sunscreen before going out in the sun. Shouldn’t you make sure their eyes are protected too? Kids need sunglasses – even more so than adults. You little one’s eyes are sensitive and growing so make sure your kids have sunglasses for their next outdoor adventure.
Did you know you should be wearing your sunglasses year round, even during the winter months? The sun might appear to be less intense in the winter but all sunlight carries harmful ultraviolet rays and blue light. Eye damage from the sun is cumulative to prevention is the key.
