Eyes on the future: ‘Project Glass’ is cool, but will Google’s glasses be practical?

Being on the cutting edge doesn’t necessarily equate with being practical, or even stylish. Case in point: Google may have the most popular search engine, but it might need to rethink its glasses.

In April 2012, Google announced it will one day bring “augmented reality” glasses to the market. Google’s so-far-secretive and futuristic technology — dubbed “Project Glass” — is eyewear aimed primarily at the technology professional. While Project Glass is closer to dream than reality, these 3-D glasses would reportedly function as a smartphone, complete with a hands-free micro display, cameras, microphone and of course a web browser.

The glasses will reportedly allow you to instantly chat with friends, and respond to friend requests. You can instantly set a reminder to see some live music after you see a concert poster. It will also be very photo-friendly, and easy to operate with a nod of the head. The interactive technology will also allow you to look outside your kitchen window and immediately see the temperature and forecast with your eyes on the clouds.

But will they look good on you? If the metallic prototypes are any indication, the answer is: Meh, not so much. Never one to give up quickly, Google will most certainly look at what styles of frames and designs are trending when the product is mass produced in a few years.

In May, Google began to consider how Project Glass could be used in conjunction with prescription lenses, which many of its designers wear. That’s also wise since 75 percent of the U.S. adult population wears eyeglasses, according to the Vision Council of America.

Unless Google’s glasses correct vision, or act as sunglasses, they could be a hard sell. In the meantime, Metro Eye’s selection is the real deal, particularly in June now that its sunglass sale is well underway.

Through June 30, Metro Eye is offering $50 off single-vision glasses and $100 off bifocals with the purchase of Polarized Sun Rx sunglasses.

You will also find select designer sunglasses from 20-to-50% off and name-brand sunwear packages from Kaenon, Maui Jim, Serengeti and Rudy Project for 10% off.
