Spring is an exciting time of year. It’s the time most of us come out of our winter hibernation and begin to enjoy the t-shirt friendly weather.  Unfortunately, for millions of Americans, it’s hard to enjoy spring because of allergies. If you suffer from seasonal allergy discomfort, you may experience the following:

  • Itchy, red eyes
  • Blurry vision
  • Swollen eyelids
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing and coughing
  • Itchy nose, mouth, or throat
  • Headaches

If you suffer from any of these symptoms, here are a few things that you can do to help reduce irritation:

  • Apply a cold compress to puffy or swollen eyes.
  • If you wear contacts, change your lenses regularly. Consider switching to a daily lens or wear glasses during a flare-up.
  • DO NOT rub or touch your eyes.
  • Frequently wash your hands.
  • Change your bed sheets and pillowcases regularly.
  • Wear glasses or sunglasses when you’re outside. Glasses can block pollen and other allergens from getting into your eyes.
  • Avoid doing outdoor activities early in the morning when pollen counts are at their highest.
  • Try to have someone else cut your grass.
  • Keep your windows closed as often as possible and run your air conditioner to ensure properly filtered air.

Allergies can affect anyone, so take preventative steps to ensure you can enjoy the gorgeous spring weather! Only your doctor will be able to tell you if your symptoms are in fact caused by allergies. Recurring symptoms may be a sign of a more serious problem. Schedule an eye exam today!
