Vision Tips for Nighttime Driving

Nighttime Driving

Even though the days are slowly getting longer, many of us still find ourselves driving in the dark fairly often. This can be dangerous, especially as the snow (eventually) begins to melt and the glare on the roads increases. To make sure you and your family are as safe as can be, we’ve created a list of our top three vision recommendations for nighttime driving:

Nighttime Driving

1. Don’t stare at bright lights. That goes for inside and outside of the car! Dim the lights on your dashboard, and don’t stare at oncoming headlights like a deer in the road. Both of these light sources can not only be huge distractions, they can also create temporary blind spots in your vision.

2. Keep your windshield and mirrors clean and your windshield wipers effective. This one goes without saying… when your windshield or mirrors are dirty it’s more difficult to see. Regular trips to the car wash can improve driving clarity by reducing glare and blind spots.

3. Make sure your eyes are healthy and wear the appropriate eyewear. The American Optometric Association recommends scheduling an annual eye exam to prevent serious eye conditions and help improve day-to-day vision. Wearing the lens prescription your doctor recommends will help you see the road clearer, and can come with anti-reflective coating to reduce distracting light and glare.

At Metro Eye, we’re definitely counting down until the days last longer and the nights are warmer, but until then we want Milwaukee drivers to stay safe when driving in the dark. Are you due for your annual eye exam? Schedule an appointment by calling (414) 727-5888 or click here!
